Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, Bishop of Athens
Icon
âď¸ parchment book painting
Converted by the Apostle Paul, as recorded in Acts 17:34, Saint Dionysius was an early church father and theologian martyred in 96 AD.
This Ethiopian manuscript illumination depicts his triumphant martyrdom found in the Coptic and Ethiopian Synaxarium. After being beheaded alongside his disciples, Usyphos and Urianos, Saint Dionysius miraculously carried his own severed head for two miles. The painting captures the heavenly reward of these apostolic witnesses, watched over by an angel as a divine dove delivers the golden Crown of Martyrdom.
Commemorated on Thout 26 in Coptic and October 6 in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. source: t.me/ethioicons
